Visitors and residents of the Village of Schaefferstown are all too familiar with the current traffic problems that plague Rte. 501. The traffic includes trucks and vehicles passing through the village via Rte. 501. Since the 1970's, the residents of Schaefferstown have requested a bypass route be constructed to reroute much of this traffic around the village. In late November 2000, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation initiated the preliminary engineering and environmental activities for the Schaefferstown Bypass Project in Lebanon County. The goal of the project is to solve the current problems with through traffic on Rte. 501 while preserving the heritage and historical beauty of Schaefferstown. As of July 2007, the Project Team has moved into the Final Design Phase of the Project with an anticipated construction start date of Spring 2009.
